A Hockey Party for Henry

Welcome to the little corner of my blog where I step away from teacher mode and talk about my other favorite thing, being a mom!

I can't believe I'm even writing this post - my BABY boy is ONE! When everyone tells you how fast it goes you really have no idea what to expect...until you're sobbing while rocking your baby to sleep one last night before he's an official toddler, then it hits you.

We decided to go with a hockey theme for his first birthday since we used his St. Louis Blues teddy bear in all his monthly photos. Plus his nursery has a hockey theme going on too.

The only thing I ran into while planning his party...there are hardly any pins on Pinterest with hockey themed parties! Which is what led me to this post. Hopefully I can share some of the things we did for Henry's party and inspire you hockey mommas out there when you're planning your own birthday bash.

Let's start with these ADORABLE invitations from Megan Kohler Design! I actually found Megan's work on a local Facebook group and I then stumbled into her Etsy shop. This invitation could not have been more perfect. Definitely check out her work for your next party.

Using my Silhouette I created the Blue Notes and numbers to display his monthly pictures. I've also told my husband this display will likely become a permanent fixture in our living room because I just love looking at the pictures!

We used our dining room table to lay out all of the food. We used a plastic white tablecloth and streamers to create the rink look.

The Silhouette came in handy again to create the Happy Birthday banner.

And my FAVORITE Amazon find ever - these balloon stands!! I searched all over town for the cheapest helium to blow up all of my balloons. The best I could do was around $1.30/balloon. With all of the balloons we had around the house I was looking at nearly $50 in helium! I couldn't justify spending that much on something that would be gone in a couple of days. My mom actually discovered the balloon stands on Amazon and they are THE.BEST.THING.EVER! And the icing on the cake is that I will have them year after year.

I think my favorite craft was these food display cards. I created them on my computer, mounted them on some card stock and then hot glued them to some hockey pucks so they'd stand on their own. It was a win-win for us: I got a cute party decoration and because I used hot glue they peeled right off and now my husband has a dozen new hockey pucks to play with!

Since we did a 2pm-4pm party we didn't serve a full lunch (which was a life-saver!), just heavy appetizers. Of course I had to give them all a fun hockey name. We had...
  • Left Wing/Right Wing (Hot Wings)
  • Face Off Fruit
  • Penalty Shot Pretzels
  • Victory Veggies
  • Top Shelf Toasted Ravioli
  • Slap Shot Smokies

Of course we all had the most wonderful weekend celebrating with family and friends. Now I'm on to uploading an excessive amount of pictures to my Google Photo Books.
